We have been driving on our AP Front brake kit for the past week. We are extremely happy with the results. The brake pedal feel is exactly what we're were calculating for. It feels OEM. Let me explain...

The goal for this brake kit is to fit under vintage 14" wheels. Vintage wheels have terrible clearance for brakes. Using our CAD model, we designed a comprehensive solution.

We specked this brake kit with the OEM rotor diameter of 275 mm. In the future, if we feel the need for more brake torque, we can easily design a 2 piece rotor with a larger diameter.

However, that wasn't the goal for this initial kit. We wanted to make one change at a time. We purposely used a rotor with the stock diameter. This way, we are not changing that variable. What we did change, however, is the pad surface area and the clamp surface area / distribution.

Additionally, the quality of caliper being used. The AP caliper is not only ridged under hydraulic load, but it's very lightweight as well.

We want balance in our brake system. Balance, not only with hydraulics, but with the chassis. Using high-quality components, we've absolutely improved the braking performance. As I mentioned before, if we want more, there is plenty left on the table by increased rotor diameters. However, bigger isn't always better.

It's also worth noting that the 275mm rotor diameter is more than sufficient for the S30Z. The S30Z is a lightweight car — it does not require massive rotors to achieve excellent braking performance. The 275mm rotor, paired with the AP Racing caliper's increased pad surface area and superior clamp force distribution, delivers more than enough stopping power for street driving, canyon carving, and even track use. The thermal mass of the rotor is well matched to the weight of the car. You are not under-braked with this setup — you are properly braked.

Strength is relatively easy to achieve with a big brake kit. Balance and good pedal feel is not. We have focused a lot of our attention on the balance and pedal feel. Driving with this setup, the brakes are undoubtedly much stronger than stock, but the pedal feels the same as stock. This was our exact goal.

Just like OEM, you can modulate the brakes precisely. Your foot has a good feel for braking force while under threshold braking. The effort needed is not excessive. Excessive pedal effort can hinder brake feel. This is important because under threshold braking, you don't want to lock up the tires. A good brake system allows you to feel the tires grip and modulate the brakes accordingly.

The Advantage: Fits Under Vintage 14" Wheels. No Spacers.

Vintage 14" wheels have notoriously tight brake clearance. Most big brake kits require spacers or simply won't fit. We designed this kit using a full CAD model of the S30Z front end to ensure everything clears — including the caliper, bracket, and rotor — with no spacers required.

The Caliper Bracket

CNC machined in-house from 7075 series aluminum. CAD designed by ZSM from concept to engineering to final part. The bracket positions the AP Racing caliper precisely over the OEM 275mm rotor diameter, maintaining the stock hydraulic balance while upgrading pad surface area and clamp force distribution.

AP Racing Calipers

After two years of evaluating brake caliper manufacturers, we chose AP Racing. They are rigid under hydraulic load, lightweight, and built to a standard that matches the precision of this build. These are not off-the-shelf calipers adapted to fit — they were selected specifically for this application after extensive spec sheet analysis.

Hydraulic Balance & Pedal Feel

We did all the calculations to ensure the hydraulic balance is correct and that the stock master cylinder can be used without modification. After a week of driving on this kit, the results matched our calculations exactly: the brakes are undoubtedly much stronger than stock, but the pedal feels the same. Precise. Modular. OEM.

Under threshold braking, you can feel the tires grip and modulate accordingly. Pedal effort is not excessive. Strength is easy. Balance and good pedal feel are not. We focused on both.

One Variable at a Time

We deliberately used the OEM rotor diameter of 275mm for this initial kit. What we changed is the pad surface area, the clamp surface area and distribution, and the quality of the caliper. If we ever want more brake torque, we can design a 2-piece rotor with a larger diameter — there is plenty left on the table. But bigger isn't always better.

Rear Calipers

The rear calipers are still incoming. They will feature an integrated parking brake. Stay tuned.
